St. Peter Lutheran Church of Upper Allen Twp., Mechanicsburg, has had a record year in their City Garden. Begun six years ago by youth member, Megan Zagoric, it has grown and blossomed (pun intended) with food for New Hope Ministries in Mechanicsburg, over 760 lbs. of produce.  This year the garden was expanded to produce more and luffas were also grown making use of an old baseball backstop. As the growing seasons draws to a close many luffas are found on the huge vines! They will be harvested, dried, peeled, bleached and will become luffa brushes to sell at next year’s Fall Fest in early September. Money received from these sales will go to New Hope Ministries. Led by church member, Clyde Forbes, members including children planted, weeded, watered and harvested green beans, bell peppers, banana peppers, Kennebec potatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, summer squash, turnips and the amazing luffas! The City Garden Committee is comprised of approximately a dozen people. A Blessing of the Harvest was held after worship in early August with Pastor Beth Martini offering the prayer.
