About Lutheran at Penn State

As they make the transition from youth to young adult, LCM offers a safe place to raise questions about life and faith, a welcoming and authentic community, and time away from the pressure and competition of campus life where everyone is welcome to “come as you are.” Lutheran Campus Ministry is an active participant in the ELCA’s mission to engage 1 million new, young, and diverse people as we move into the future.

  • Worship: In worship, students center themselves and encounter God alongside other people of faith. They raise questions, learn more about Jesus, develop a more adult understanding of God and God’s presence in the world, and explore how they live their faith.

  • Discussions and Bible Study: Students explore ideas in a loving community where people listen and learn from each other. Informal and more structured discussions offer conversation about scripture and important issues on life and faith. These conversations help students delve more deeply into what faith means for them.

  • Service-Learning: Students use their time and their abilities to serve God and their neighbors— doing God’s work with their hands and helping to transform the world. Reflection and conversation help students consider systemic issues and the importance of service. Projects have included:

    • Urban feeding programs
    • Local Anti-Hunger Food distribution sites
    • Penn State Arboretum
    • Spring Break service-learning pilgrimages to DC, AL, AZ, and FL
    • Penn State Clothing Transit
  • Community: In community gatherings around meals, students give and receive God’s love and compassion, discovering the deep comfort of being welcome without judgment or strings attached.

Alumni & Student Voices

Lutheran Campus Ministry served as a bridge from a high school version of myself to the adult version of myself in my faith journey. It was great to have a community of friends and peers who served as a group to talk about God and Jesus; working through the college experience and then also prepped me to interact with groups of adults in their 20s and 30s after graduating from college.

Jon Luettgen – Class of 2016 – Mathematics Education

Lutheran Campus Ministry brought light into my life. I transferred during my first year of college and in the midst of all the decision making and complicated paperwork, I lost my focus and my faith. I made a goal to make my new college an asset for diving deeper into my religion and Lutheran Campus Ministry has done just that for me. I have been positively impacted in all aspects of my life by joining this group, and I can’t wait for it to make an impact on more people’s lives.

Brooke Sargen – Class of 2023 – Biology

Lutheran Campus Ministry has given me a safe space to come and know that anything I say will be received warmly by a good group of people who I think are honestly some of the nicest people I’ve ever met.
