May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

AAPI Heritage Month is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the U.S. and learn more about the rich and diverse histories, cultures, and contributions of AAPI communities. Stop AAPI Hate: Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, hate against AAPI communities has risen. Learn more and take action.

May is also Mental Health Awareness Month.

Gather magazine spotlights the issue of mental health through its May 2024 devotional, “Compassionate companions.”  Share this resource with members of your congregation or use it in your home or Bible study group. Together, let’s learn more about an issue that impacts more than one in five adults living in the United States. Together, let’s make a difference! Read more.

5/19 – A Justice Pentecost
Pentecost can be observed and taught from a justice perspective! Resources for that can be found here: Christians for Social Action, The Lessons of Pentecost and Pentecost Resource for Immigration Reform (2015)

We also have the chance to celebrate justice and peace with new resources, studies, and the chance to be part of a new ELCA Social Statement on Civic Life and Faith!

What does it mean to be a “peacemaker” in a world marred by violence? A new five-session study guide returns to the ELCA’s 1995 social statement on peace, using its teachings to explore how Lutherans are called to respond to war and conflict today. Download the guide for your group or individual study.

Just Peace is an additional set of tools for churches to address systemic injustice using non-violence and Just Peace practices from the UCC. Visit Just Peace here.

We can use this learning to inform our comments on the new ELCA Civic Life and Faith Statement about the relationship of church and state, and related matters, as called for by the 2019 ELCA Churchwide Assembly. At this time a task force encourages you to study and give feedback on a draft version of the social statement. Read a draft of the survey and submit your comments here.
