Best Practices: Nuggets

A collection of field tested ministry resources

gold nuggetsThe Office for Children, Youth & Family Ministry is pleased to introduce this new vehicle for exchanging and sharing resources for use in the family home or congregational ministry settings. We call it “Best Practices: Nuggets.” Each Nugget is a simple, practical tool or resource that has been tested and found to be useful in spurring faith conversation or faith formation in a ministry setting.

Check out our CYFM Resources Link for additional ideas!

A brief description of each Nugget can be found below, but we recommend opening the pdf document to “see” the actual resources and read how to use it in a home or ministry setting. Use them “as is” or be creative and find ways to use these resources to better fit your specific ministry setting. If you have a resource to share, send a copy to our office at croberts@lss-elca.org.

A Lenten Photo – A – Day Resource

Similar to an Advent resource listed below, the Lenten photo-a-day resource inspires youth, young adults or family members to capture imagery in the world around them as they contemplate certain words chosen for each day off Lent. This imagery could be used to stimulate conversation around the family table, in the car on the way to band practice, or with your congregational youth group or Sunday school class. To get a printable copy of the resource, visit The Slate Project website, or on Facebook at: Slate Project on Facebook . They also have a twitter handle for those who want to share their pics with the world, #reLENT.

Six-Word Memoirs

With thanks to my friend Heidi Hagstrom, ELCA Youth Gathering Director, here is a fun little ice-breaker that could go deeper! Basically you will ask the group to describe their life in six words, using an exercise Earnest Hemingway once tried of writing a novel in six words. Hemingway wrote, “For Sale: baby shoes, never worn.” Don’t worry, there are plenty of other examples attached to this handout. Print it, use it, and trust me…every time you try it, your words will likely change. Fun and insightful! SixWordMemoirs

Candle Prayer: Word Squares

This simple devotional or conversation starter can be used for a family devotion in the home, or as a small group conversation starter or prayer starter in youth group or at a church council meeting. You’ll need a copy of the handout depicting word squares (looks like a crossword puzzle), plus a candle and lighter. Participants read and share the scripture from 1 John 1: 3-5, and use the word squares to help them “pray” for people or things in their life that need prayer. To learn more, download a copy of this resource.

Leaving Your Mark

This simple devotional or conversation starter can be used for a family devotion in the home, or as a small group conversation starter or prayer starter in youth group or at a church council meeting. You’ll need a copy of the handout depicting a barren tree included with the resource, and an ink pad. Participants read and share the scripture from 1 Thessalonians 1: 2-3, and leave their “mark” as a way to start a discussion about the way we impact the lives of others we encounter each week.
