What is Summerfest & what can we expect if we come?
Summerfest is a one-day event that combines community with fun, worship, live music and food, in the picturesque setting of Camp Nawakwa. Plus this year we have shortened the schedule to allow those traveling a distance to get home at a reasonable hour. Affordable, and designed to appeal to all ages, the event includes some of the following:
- A full picnic-style meal plus a late-day snack
- A mini-concert (this year featuring Rachel Kurtz)
- Worship with Holy Communion
- Pool time
- Labyrinth walks, hiking, and leisurely trail wandering around camp
- Games for all ages, including but not limited to Volleyball, Ultimate Frisbee, Softball
- Card games and relaxing conversation
- Live music provided by local youth and young adult artists
- *”Walk for Water” Challenge = interactive experience (see more below)
Registration is easy! Simply download the attached form, list the numbers you expect to bring (names aren’t as important right now), and mail it to the Office for Children, Youth & Family at the synod, 900 S. Arlington Ave, Room 220B, Harrisburg, PA 17109.
*ELCA World Hunger “Walk for Water”: TWO Venues – One Shared Mission
We are excited to partner with ELCA World Hunger, to offer the “Walk for Water” Challenge. This interactive experience allows participants to feel what it’s like to carry five gallon containers of water from a water source to your village. A chore some women and children will complete three or more times daily, simply to survive. Our worship offering will be donated to ELCA World Hunger, and designated to dig a well in a rural village. Our Lutheran Youth Organization (LYO) board will also donate a percentage of the event registration fees. Maybe your congregation would consider taking a special offering to be brought and gifted by your youth at Summerfest!?
On the same day in Harrisburg, a local health club, Gold’s Gym Lingelstown will be sponsoring a Boot Camp that features a “Walk for Water” component, with all donations also going to support our goal of $2,500.00, for a new village well. If you can’t attend Summerfest, perhaps you’d like to participate in the 45-minute BootCamp at Gold’s from 9:30-10:15 AM. Members and non-members can participate for a donation. Gold’s Linglestown is located at 4450 Oakhurst Blvd, in Harrisburg.
It was a perfect summer day that greeted participants to Summerfest 2015. Plus, we welcomed the band Lost & Found, fresh off an ELCA Youth Gathering just one week earlier in Detroit, and appearing on their final Farewell Tour.
No soaking rains at Summerfest 2014, but plenty of water fun, including the giant slip n’ slide which proved to be a big hit with children and adults alike.
The event included a baptismal theme, so the pool was open, the slip n’ slide in full effect, and the highlight of the day was our closing worship that included three baptisms!
Singer/songwriter Jonathan Rundman, a veteran of ELCA Youth Gatherings and synod youth events joined us for a mini-concert, including a traditional hymn-sing. For a taste of Jonathan’s music, visit: http://jonathanrundman.com/press-quotes/
- An outdoor concert with David “Agape” Scherer
- Games and crafts for a variety of ages, hiking and prayer labyrinth walks
- Worship with Holy Communion in a beautiful outdoor setting
- A community meal
It doesn’t get any better than this. Unless, of course we get to do it again. WE DO…Summerfest 2016 is coming July 23, 2016. Join children as young as a few weeks old, up to grandparents in their 70’s. Won’t you join us in 2016?!
